Embroidered Journals
Heather Cavalieri
Sharadin Studio 121
Participants in this workshop will discuss the qualities of embroidery and fiber art that make these disciplines especially suited to introducing and practicing mindfulness. Using a felt journal, students will learn three basic embroidery stitches as well as techniques for creating sewing guidelines to follow. Those three simple stitches will be used as a vehicle to practice present awareness utilizing all of the tactile qualities of working with fiber. The project has wonderful possibilities that can be adapted to many different grade levels and needs. Students will go home with their unique stitched journal and the knowledge to use embroidery to further explore mindfulness and embodied ways of learning.
Creating paper and fiber based art in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, artist Heather Cavalieri holds a degree in psychology from La Roche University and a BFA in Craft with a concentration in fibers from Oregon College of Art & Craft. Her art also resides in private collections throughout the United States. Cavalieri teaches classes at Bloomery Art Co., focusing on creative art practices, simple book-making, and mindful embroidery.
